Hybrid Box

From: John Chapman (john@johnsblog.com) | Date: 2004-10-01 11:31:12 UTC-04:00
Has anyone had experience placing a hybrid letterbox/geocache? I'm particularly looking for hints on how to make it work.

I've tried both hobbies and don't really care much for geocaching myself but I'm thinking of placing a hybrid box to see how it goes. The directions would clearly state Take Nothing Leave Nothing, Sign Log (TNLNSL) to avoid people taking the stamp or leaving junk.

I've only seen one hybrid box, and it had a stamp & inkpad as well as geocache trinkets (Deedle & I had never seen a geocache before, so we were rather amused by some of the trade items. What's with all the pens?? :) The mint tin that the stamp was in was clearly marked, "NOT a trade item," and this was also spelled out in the clues a number of times.

I'd think that if you're going to make the box a hybrid for geocaching, you're going to have to allow for "junk" to be left, since that's how they play their game, and do your best to educate them that "the stamp stays!"

Doodle, who has never geocached before (we can't afford a GPS, we spent all the money on letterboxing supplies! :)

Letterboxers wear Khakis. Or jeans. Or shorts, if they're not scared of poison ivy. And rainjackets when they're crazy enough to go 'boxing in a downpour. And sunscreen, bug spray, big backpacks to hold all those stamp pads and box first aid supplies and extra bug spray and their very important water, and good hiking boots, and...

I found a couple in the Allentown, PA area, of course needing a GPS
to find them. Stamps were store bought, but OK. My son liked the
trading aspect.

Not much else to say,

is the only hybrid I've done. It rates as one of my favorite
geocaches and favorite letterboxes. However, since a GPS is
required, I really consider it to be a geocache. I don't count it in
my letterboxing finds.

OK, the link doesn't seem to be cooperating. Just go to
geocaching.com and search for letterbox hybrids in Mississippi. It's
the only one.

The Birdhouse letterbox and the Depot Geocache in Needham, MA are the only
combo one I've done, and they're just separate containers in the same hiding
spot.

Someone planted a hybrid in my area, but it went away before I got a chance
to hunt for it.

The "cleanest" hybrid box we've found had separate logbooks and
instructions bagged for geocachers and letterboxers. Of course the
LB Stamp was included in the bag with the LB Logbook. The
geocaching material was all contained within the other plastic bag.
That particular hybrid had clearly marked instructions to not take
anything from the box nor to leave any trinkets. We found one or
two small items in the bottom of the box. But for the most part the
uniqueness of each search seemed to be respected.

I ran into a hybrid box in CNY totally by accident.
My hubby is a geocacher, and after I dragged him along
on many LB searches, I went with him after a geocach
(hey, it was only fair). To my suprise and delight,
inside the cache was a small container marked
"Letterbox hybrid - geocachers DO NOT trade". There
was a small stamp and logbook inside.

This LB was NOT listed on LbNA, so what a nice
suprise! I think as long as the LB items are clearly
marked, it's a nice addition to letterboxing. And it
gives those of us who enjoy both hobbies a chance to
do them at the same time!!!

I still prefer LB'ing, though. Geocaching ONLY when
the hubby insists!! ;)

I picked up a geocache that could have been a hybrid. The clue
indicated that the cache was located in an unused section of an old,
small town cemetery. Didn't need a GPS for that part, it was the only
cemetery in town. Coordinates for the stash site were given, but the
hint read "Look up, not down". There were 2 large trees out in the
middle of this smallish fenced-in field and the cache was hidden in
the roots of one of the trees.
